Leafville High School Artificial Intelligence and Ethics Policy

 

I. Introduction

  • Purpose of the Policy: To provide guidance on the ethical and responsible use of generative AI

  • Scope: This policy applies to all students, teachers, and administrative staff within Leafville Ohio High School. It governs the use of generative AI technologies in various contexts, including classroom activities, homework assignments, and research projects.

II. Definitions

  • Generative AI: Generative AI refers to artificial intelligence technologies capable of producing original content, such as text, images, or audio, based on patterns and data inputs. This includes but is not limited to language models and neural networks.

  • Key Terms:

  • Academic Integrity: Upholding honesty and ethical standards in academic work, including proper citation and acknowledgment of sources.

  • Bias: Systematic errors or prejudices in AI-generated content that may result in unfair outcomes or discrimination.

  • Accessibility: Ensuring that AI tools and content are usable and available to all individuals, regardless of their abilities or circumstances.

III. Ethical Principles

  • Integrity and Honesty: Users of generative AI tools are expected to maintain academic integrity by properly attributing AI-generated content and distinguishing it from original work.

  • Equity and Accessibility: Efforts will be made to ensure equitable access to AI tools and address potential biases in AI-generated content to promote fairness and inclusivity.

  • Privacy and Security: Measures will be implemented to protect the privacy and security of students’ and educators’ data when using AI tools, in compliance with relevant laws and regulations such as FERPA.

IV. Guidelines for Use

  • Educational Use Cases: Approved applications of generative AI in supporting learning objectives include generating supplemental learning materials, facilitating language translation, or assisting in research projects.

  • Prohibited Uses: Situations or purposes for which generative AI may not be used include, but are not limited to, completing assignments on behalf of students or creating deceptive or misleading content.

  • Collaboration and Sharing: Guidelines on how students and teachers can collaborate and share AI-generated work responsibly within and outside the school environment emphasize the importance of proper attribution and ethical use.

V. Responsibilities

  • Students: Students are responsible for using generative AI tools responsibly, including citing sources appropriately and clearly distinguishing between AI-assisted and original work.

  • Teachers and Staff: Educators play a crucial role in guiding, monitoring, and evaluating the use of generative AI in educational activities, fostering ethical use, and providing support to students.

  • Administration: School administrators are responsible for providing support, resources and training for the effective and ethical use of AI technologies within the school, considering the realistic resources of a rural school setting.

VI. Monitoring and Compliance

  • Monitoring Use: The use of generative AI will be monitored to ensure compliance with the policy, with a focus on promoting ethical behavior and safeguarding student and staff privacy.

  • Handling Violations: Procedures for addressing breaches of the policy will be established, including potential consequences for violations, such as disciplinary actions, educational interventions, or removal of technology privileges.

VII. Support and Resources

  • Training and Education: Training modules and educational resources on the ethical use of generative AI will be provided to students and staff, tailored to the specific needs and resources of a rural school environment.

  • Technical Support: Information on where and how to access technical support for AI tools will be provided to assist users in troubleshooting issues and maximizing the benefits of AI technologies.

  • Policy Review Schedule: With the rapid pace AI technology is developing at, these policies will be reviewed yearly to adapt to new developments in AI technology and educational practices, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness over time.

  • Feedback Mechanism: Mechanisms for students, teachers, and parents to provide feedback on the policy will be implemented, allowing for continuous improvement and responsiveness to stakeholder concerns and perspectives.
